England batter Joe Root became the second-highest run-scorer in men’s Test cricket during his century on day three of the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford, Manchester. The 34-year-old reached three figures for the 38th time in the format and pushed on to 150 before Ravindra Jadeja stumped him, taking his career aggregate to roughly 13,380 runs. Root vaulted from fifth to second on the all-time list in a single innings, overtaking Rahul Dravid (13,288), Jacques Kallis (13,289) and Ricky Ponting (13,378). Only India great Sachin Tendulkar, with 15,921 runs, now stands ahead of him. Root’s knock helped England erase India’s first-innings total of 358 and move into the lead; the hosts were 75 runs ahead with six wickets in hand at tea. The performance strengthens England’s position both in the match and in the current World Test Championship cycle.
