A surge in sophisticated cybercrimes, including identity theft and scams exploiting AI technology, has been reported globally. Criminals are using phishing emails, QR code scams, malicious PDF files, and fake APK apps to steal personal information and financial data. In India, identity theft cases have risen sharply, with tactics such as deepfake technology and fraudulent KYC updates over phone calls. Scammers also impersonate tax authorities, sending fake emails about irregularities in CPF or PAN details to extort money, sometimes demanding a Rs 124.60 fine. In China, impostors on social media platforms like RedNote are using stolen identities to deceive users. Over 20 malicious PDF files have been identified as part of a large-scale phishing operation targeting users in 50+ countries. India recorded 27.2 million identity theft victims in 2022, the highest globally. The use of AI tools has made phishing attacks harder to detect, with generative AI creating highly convincing fake documents and emails. Experts recommend measures such as enabling two-factor authentication, avoiding suspicious links, and verifying communication sources to mitigate risks.
