Mexico’s consumer-price index rose 4.32% in June from a year earlier, down slightly from May’s 4.42% but marginally above economists’ forecasts, according to national statistics agency INEGI. A drop in fruit, vegetable and energy costs moderated the headline figure, yet core inflation—which excludes volatile items—accelerated to 4.24%, its highest level since April 2024. With the headline rate still above Banxico’s 3% ±1 percentage-point target, analysts say the central bank may trim its easing pace after four consecutive half-point cuts that have brought the policy rate to 8%. A Citi survey points to a 25-basis-point reduction at the 7 August meeting. In India, official data showed retail inflation plunging to 2.10% in June from 2.82% in May, the lowest reading since January 2019 and below the 2.5% consensus. Food prices fell 1.06% year-on-year, led by a 19% slide in vegetable costs, helping headline inflation hover near the lower bound of the Reserve Bank of India’s 2–6% tolerance band. Core inflation is estimated at around 4.4–4.5%. The sharp slowdown strengthens the case for further monetary easing after the RBI’s surprise 50-basis-point cut in June that reduced the repo rate to 5.5%. Economists expect the central bank to pause in August and consider another cut as early as October if food disinflation persists. The contrasting prints highlight diverging price dynamics across large emerging markets. While Mexico grapples with sticky services and goods inflation that could restrain Banxico’s room to maneuver, India’s broad-based disinflation is giving the RBI space to prioritise growth. Investors are watching upcoming policy meetings for signals on how each central bank balances easing cycles against lingering core pressures and external risks.
