India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha, on August 20, 2025. The launch, conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, validated all operational and technical parameters. The Agni-5 missile has a range exceeding 5,000 kilometers, with some reports specifying a range of approximately 4,790 km, and can reach speeds up to Mach 24 (about 28,600 km/h). It forms the core of India's nuclear deterrence strategy and is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead to any part of China. The test comes shortly before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to China. India is also advancing its indigenous defense capabilities, including the development of the Tejas aircraft and plans for fifth-generation fighter jets and aircraft engines, as stated by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
