India's electronics manufacturing sector is experiencing rapid growth, marked by a 47% surge in electronics exports to $12.4 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, driven primarily by mobile phone production. Over the past decade, India's electronics production has expanded from $31 billion to $133 billion, supported by more than 300 mobile manufacturing units nationwide. The government and private sector are making significant strides in semiconductor development, with Cyient launching a $100 million semiconductor division focused on power-efficient ASICs for automotive, data centers, medical, aerospace, and defense applications. Additionally, India is constructing its first commercial-scale silicon fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat, confirmed by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The country is also advancing its electric vehicle ambitions through an 80:20 joint venture between Pavna Industries and Taiwan’s SmartChip Microelectronic Corporation. Foxconn has initiated small-scale production of the iPhone 17 Pro at its new ₹25,000 crore facility in Bengaluru, underscoring India's growing role in Apple's global manufacturing strategy. Despite ambitions to reduce dependence on China, Indian electronics manufacturing still relies heavily on Chinese technical expertise and know-how. Globally, countries including Mexico, Malaysia, and India are aiming to increase domestic semiconductor production. Meanwhile, in the United States, GlobalWafers has become the first company to produce silicon wafers domestically, supported by investments from Apple and TSMC. Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted these developments during a speech in Delhi, emphasizing the country’s progress in manufacturing and local production initiatives.
