The Indian government is considering new regulations to limit the temperature settings of air conditioners to a range between 20 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius. Proposed by Union Minister for Power Manohar Lal Khattar, this move aims to reduce electricity consumption and address rising power demand amid extreme heatwaves. The temperature cap is expected to result in consumer savings of approximately Rs 18,000-20,000 crore over three years once implemented. Air conditioners account for about one-fifth of India's peak electricity load, making this regulation a significant step toward energy efficiency. The initiative builds on a 2018 plan by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and involves collaboration with appliance manufacturers. However, experts caution that temperature restrictions alone may not substantially reduce energy use without improvements in building design and could lead to prolonged AC usage during heatwaves. Additionally, there is a recognized need to phase out ozone-depleting refrigerants like HFCs to achieve sustainable cooling solutions. The government has also introduced schemes such as ADEETIE to support energy-efficient technologies in industrial establishments through interest subsidies for MSMEs.
Policymakers encouraging #energy-efficient #ACs must realise this alone won't offset the long-term #globalwarming impact of #ozone-depleting refrigerants. The future of cooling requires a complete shift away from #HFCs & harmful emissions: Krishna Vohra https://t.co/MizG4nDib3
NORTH INDIA’s temperatures have mostly been below average since the start of May, limiting airconditioning and refrigeration and curbing growth in electricity demand. Average daily temperatures in the New Delhi suburb of Palam have been below the long-term norm on 54 of the last https://t.co/ucmXRA27Zx
