Indore has been named India’s cleanest city for the eighth year in a row, extending a winning streak that began in 2017. The Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 awards were announced in New Delhi on Thursday, where President Droupadi Murmu handed the top honour to officials from the Madhya Pradesh city. The central government’s survey placed Surat and Navi Mumbai second and third respectively in the new “Super Swachh League”, a category that groups 23 cities with populations above one million that have consistently finished near the top in previous editions. Ahmedabad was recognised as the cleanest ‘big city’ under a separate ranking system, while Noida led the 3–10 lakh population bracket. Organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, the ninth edition of the survey examined sanitation practices in more than 4,500 towns and cities, involving on-site inspections, waste-management audits and feedback from an estimated 14 crore residents. A total of 78 awards were distributed across population-based and thematic categories, reinforcing the government’s push for waste segregation, recycling and community participation.
