India’s Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment marked “National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Day” with a programme in Lucknow on Wednesday. Union Minister of State B.L. Verma presided over the event at Mercury Hall, Indira Gandhi Pratishthan, highlighting efforts to improve safety and welfare for sewer and septic-tank cleaners as well as waste pickers. Verma distributed personal protective equipment kits and Ayushman Bharat health-insurance cards to workers, aiming to reduce on-the-job hazards and extend medical coverage. He also launched a dedicated helpline, 14473, to handle grievances and support services for waste pickers, and unveiled an augmented- and virtual-reality training module designed to strengthen occupational-safety practices for sanitation staff.
