Justice Abhay S. Oka retired from the Supreme Court of India after serving for three years and nine months, following previous tenures as a judge of the Bombay High Court and Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. On his last working day, Justice Oka delivered 11 judgments despite recently losing his mother. In his farewell address, Justice Oka emphasized the Supreme Court's role as the guardian of constitutional liberties and stated that he had always endeavored to uphold these values. He remarked that a judge must be firm and able to offend when necessary, noting, 'We are not becoming judges to become popular.' Justice Oka was noted for his judgments on environmental law, including the statement that cutting trees is like murder, and for his rulings in the Tarsem Lal judgment, which clarified that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) cannot arrest after a special court has taken cognisance of a case. He also held that the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cannot be misused to keep individuals in jail and compared its misuse to that of the dowry law. Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and other senior legal figures paid tribute to Justice Oka's work ethic, including his delivery of 11 judgments on his last day, and his approach to upholding constitutional principles. Justice Oka expressed gratitude for the affection shown by the legal community and reiterated his belief in the importance of the Supreme Court in protecting liberty.
