Unidentified vandals defaced the statue of late Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) patriarch and former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi in Salem’s Anna Park in the early hours of 15 July, splashing it with black paint. Salem Police have opened an investigation, collecting forensic samples of the paint and scanning CCTV footage from adjoining streets after learning the park itself has no cameras. No arrests had been made as of Tuesday morning. DMK members condemned the act and party officials said they are conducting their own inquiries into the source of the paint.
