Delhi: Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale says, "They have come together over the Marathi issue... Raj Thackeray's people are acting like bullies, saying 'Speak Marathi or get slapped..." https://t.co/FLzEf4c2ym
Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale on Sunday publicly rebuked Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray over remarks and alleged intimidatory tactics aimed at forcing residents of Mumbai to speak Marathi. Athawale said Thackeray’s comments encouraged party workers to “act like bullies” by threatening vendors and other non-Marathi speakers with violence. Drawing a parallel with militant attacks on tourists in Kashmir that targeted people based on religion, Athawale warned that linguistic vigilantism could undermine Mumbai’s status as a commercial hub. “Strong-arm measures against non-Marathi speakers will see an exodus of industry leaders from the city,” the minister said, urging political leaders to preserve Mumbai’s cosmopolitan character.
