The Supreme Court of India has ruled that reservation policies in West Bengal must not be based on religion, overturning a previous classification of 77 communities as Other Backward Classes (OBC), which primarily included the Muslim community. This decision comes in response to an appeal filed by the West Bengal government against a Calcutta High Court judgment that quashed the OBC classification. In a separate matter, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has filed a fresh plea in the Supreme Court regarding the Places of Worship Act, arguing that no full majority government has amended the Act, which was originally enacted to prevent communal riots. They claim that there is an indirect attempt to abrogate the 1991 Act.
