The Supreme Court of India is set to hear pleas from the Kerala government on May 6 regarding delays by the state Governor in approving bills passed by the Kerala State Assembly. This development follows a recent Supreme Court verdict delivered on April 8, 2025, which clarified the powers of the President of India and state Governors in granting assent to bills. While the Tamil Nadu Governor case established timelines for Governors and the President to clear bills, the Centre has stated that this judgment does not apply to the Kerala case due to differing facts. The Supreme Court has agreed to examine whether the Tamil Nadu verdict is relevant to the issues raised by Kerala. The Attorney General and Solicitor General, representing the Centre, have emphasized the factual differences between the two cases. The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice PS Narasimha will consider these matters in the upcoming hearing.
