The Indian telecom regulator, TRAI, has announced new rules under the Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Ninth Amendment) Regulations, 2024, which will come into force on July 1. These regulations aim to curb fraudulent SIM swaps and replacements by unscrupulous elements. As part of the new rules, there will be a seven-day waiting period after a SIM swap or replacement before a mobile number becomes eligible for porting. Additionally, individuals can face a fine of Rs 2 lakh and up to three years in jail for violating the new SIM card regulations.
