The US Food and Drug Administration on 19 August warned consumers not to eat, sell or serve specific lots of Great Value brand raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart after tests suggested possible contamination with the radioactive isotope Cesium-137. The two-pound bags were imported from Indonesia and distributed under Walmart’s private label. U.S. Customs and Border Protection first detected Cesium-137 in shipping containers arriving at ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Savannah. Follow-up FDA sampling found 68 Bq/kg in one shipment of breaded shrimp—below the agency’s intervention threshold of 1,200 Bq/kg but sufficient for regulators to cite a potential long-term health risk from cumulative exposure. Acting on the agency’s recommendation, Walmart has recalled three lot codes—8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1—with best-by dates of 15 March 2027. The product reached stores in 13 states, including Florida, Texas and Pennsylvania. Consumers are advised to discard the shrimp or return it for a refund, and retailers have been told to remove the affected lots from sale. The shrimp was processed by Indonesian exporter PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, also known as BMS Foods, which has been placed on a new FDA import alert that bars further shipments until the company resolves the contamination concerns. Regulators said no shrimp that tested positive had entered the U.S. food supply and that the investigation, conducted with Indonesian authorities, remains ongoing.
