Indonesia commemorated its 80th Independence Day on August 17, 2025, with a series of grand celebrations primarily centered in Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto led the flag-raising ceremony at the Istana Merdeka, marking his first time presiding over the event as president. The ceremony featured the traditional raising of the Sang Saka Merah Putih flag, with 80 Paskibraka members forming a formation symbolizing the anniversary. The event included a military airshow with TNI Air Force fighter jets such as F-16, T-50i, and Hawk performing a formation of the number "80" over Monas and the presidential palace, accompanied by red and white smoke displays. A notable addition to the festivities was the inaugural public carnival and street parade starting from Monas and passing through key Jakarta landmarks, featuring cultural performances, ministerial participation, and a large public gathering. The carnival was also celebrated in various regions including Papua Barat Daya, Maluku Utara, and Sulawesi Utara, with unique local ceremonies such as underwater flag-raising in Maluku Utara. Security was heightened with nearly 10,000 personnel deployed to ensure order during the events. Former Indonesian Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo attended the ceremony, sitting side by side. The celebrations extended internationally with Indonesian communities marking the day in cities like London, Sydney, and Phnom Penh. The day also coincided with the conditional release of former Speaker of the House Setya Novanto, convicted in the e-KTP corruption case involving losses of approximately Rp 2.3 trillion. This release drew criticism from anti-corruption activists and legal experts who viewed it as a setback in anti-corruption efforts. The government organized various cultural programs and televised special coverage to highlight the significance of the 80th anniversary under the theme "Bersatu, Berdaulat, Rakyat Sejahtera, Indonesia Maju" (United, Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia). President Prabowo's attire reflected Indonesian cultural heritage, wearing Betawi traditional clothing during the ceremony. The day concluded with a fireworks display and public festivities, including interactions between President Prabowo and citizens at the Monas area.
