Indonesia celebrated its 80th Independence Day on August 17, 2025, with a series of grand events primarily centered in Jakarta. President Prabowo Subianto led the main flag-raising ceremony at the Istana Merdeka, marking his first time presiding over the Independence Day commemoration as president. The ceremony began at 7:30 a.m. WIB with the procession of the national flag, the Sang Saka Merah Putih, carried from Monas to the palace on the Kereta Kencana Garuda Prabayaksa. Nearly 10,000 security personnel were deployed to ensure safety during the celebrations. The theme for the 80th anniversary was "Bersatu Berdaulat, Rakyat Sejahtera, Indonesia Maju" (United Sovereign, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia). The event featured a military airshow with TNI AU aircraft including F-16, T-50i, and Hawk jets forming the number "80" over Monas and the presidential palace, complemented by red and white smoke bombs. Seventeen elite Kopassus paratroopers performed a "Victory Jump" from 10,000 feet, landing near Monas while carrying the anniversary flag. The Paskibraka national flag bearers formed an "80" formation during the flag-raising. President Prabowo wore traditional Betawi attire and became the first Indonesian president to read the Proclamation text during the ceremony. The celebrations included a cultural carnival starting from Monas and passing through key Jakarta landmarks such as Sudirman and Thamrin avenues, featuring cultural parades, ministerial participation, and performances by artists like Rossa, Endah Laras, and Cakra Khan. A public festival and fireworks display took place at Monas, where President Prabowo interacted with attendees from the sunroof of his Maung vehicle. Former Presidents Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Joko Widodo attended the ceremony, seated side by side. Unique regional celebrations were held, including an underwater flag-raising in Maluku Utara led by Governor Sherly Tjoanda in a mermaid costume, symbolizing the importance of the sea to Indonesia. Other ceremonies took place in Papua, Sulawesi Utara, Lampung, and internationally among Indonesian communities in London, Phnom Penh, Sydney, and Germany. The government also organized a first-ever public carnival at the Istana Merdeka grounds and Monas area. Despite the overall success, there was an incident in Mamasa where the flag was raised upside down, which was calmly corrected by the Paskibraka team. The event was widely covered by KompasTV and Kompas.com, with live streaming available. International congratulations came from ASEAN and Singapore leaders. The celebrations reflected Indonesia's unity, sovereignty, and cultural diversity as it marked eight decades of independence.
