In Indonesia's 80th Independence Day celebrations, President Prabowo Subianto delivered a State of the Nation address emphasizing a crackdown on illegal mining, corruption in state-owned enterprises (BUMN) and regional government-owned enterprises (BUMD), and government institutions. He claimed to have saved approximately Rp300 trillion through anti-corruption efforts. Prabowo also vowed to take action against any generals or former generals supporting illegal mining activities. The government deployed nearly 10,000 combined personnel to secure the Jakarta celebrations. Meanwhile, 76 top youth from 38 provinces were officially appointed as members of the National Flag Hoisting Troop (Paskibraka) 2025, with the inauguration conducted by the Minister of State Secretariat at the State Palace. Megawati Soekarnoputri, Chairperson of the Pancasila Ideology Development Agency, attended the Paskibraka inauguration and shared her personal experience as a Paskibraka member in 1963. Security forces, including the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), neutralized eight members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) in three locations ahead of the celebrations. The Jakarta Light Festival 2025 also featured spectacular light installations to mark the occasion. Discussions around social issues such as uneven education, unemployment, and layoffs continued amid the festivities, questioning the true meaning of independence.
