Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used by cybercriminals to enhance scams, including voice cloning, deepfake videos, and hyper-personalized phishing attempts. These technologies allow scammers to impersonate trusted individuals and create highly convincing fraudulent communications, posing significant risks to individuals and organizations. AI-powered scams include voice cloning to mimic family members or supervisors, deepfake videos impersonating public figures, and AI-generated phishing campaigns that exploit personal data. These scams are often used to extract money, sensitive information, or manipulate victims into fraudulent transactions. Efforts to combat AI-driven scams are also leveraging advanced AI technologies. Companies like Apate.ai are using their AI tool, AI.Callee, to disrupt scam operations by engaging scammers in real-time, gathering intelligence on their tactics, and reducing their ability to target real victims. Similarly, financial institutions like Visa and Mastercard are deploying AI tools to detect and prevent fraud at scale. Visa has invested $11 billion in anti-fraud technology over the past five years. In Colombia, a cryptocurrency scam named AxionixTrader has been exposed for using a fake article mimicking the branding of El Tiempo and falsely attributing endorsements to public figures such as Gustavo Bolívar. The scam lures victims into fraudulent investments by fabricating financial success stories. Medicare fraud schemes targeting seniors are also on the rise, with scammers offering genetic testing services under false pretenses. Victims are often misled into providing Medicare details, which are then used for unauthorized billing. Such scams can result in financial losses ranging between $9,000 and $11,000.
