Elon Musk's social media platform X has introduced XChat, a new encrypted messaging service designed to rival WhatsApp and Telegram by offering encrypted chats, vanishing messages, and phone-free calls. XChat allows users to remain anonymous if desired and supports voice calling within the platform. However, the service has raised security concerns as it stores private keys on X-owned servers protected only by a four-digit PIN, making it vulnerable to decryption by X itself under hostile or legal pressure. Additionally, XChat is susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks, potentially allowing unauthorized access to messages without users' knowledge. The platform does not secure metadata, further limiting privacy. To enhance user awareness, X is developing features to detect screenshots and screen recordings within chats and notify other participants when such actions occur. Despite its encryption claims, experts recommend using more established privacy-focused apps like Signal for secure communication.
PREVIEW: Similiar to other privacy-focused chat apps like Signal, XChat will soon add a feature that tells who you're messaging if you take a screenshot of the DMs. https://t.co/FNYNDUdv9b
