Lebanon’s cabinet has approved a measure aimed at limiting the possession of arms to state security institutions, a move that would require Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement to surrender its arsenal. Hezbollah immediately rejected the decision. Mohammad Raad, who heads the group’s parliamentary bloc, said the government’s action is “hasty and dangerous,” describing disarmament as “suicide” and warning that relinquishing weapons would expose the country to Israeli interference. Tehran also weighed in. Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Iran opposes any attempt to strip Hezbollah of its weapons, calling the plan part of an American-Israeli plot and asserting that “disarming Hezbollah is a dream that will never come true.”
