Israel said its navy conducted a long-range strike early Sunday on the Haziz power station in Sanhan district, just south of Yemen’s Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa. The Israel Defense Forces described the target as an “energy infrastructure site that served the Houthi terrorist regime,” adding that the missiles were launched from about 2,000 kilometres away. Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV confirmed the facility was hit, reporting multiple explosions that knocked some generators out of service and triggered a fire that civil-defence teams later contained. The station’s outage caused power cuts in Sanaa; no casualties were immediately reported. Israel said the strike was a direct response to repeated Houthi missile and drone launches at its territory. Within hours of the attack, Israeli air-defence systems intercepted a missile fired from Yemen, the army said, prompting sirens across central Israel. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant announced Israel is imposing a “very painful” air and naval blockade on the Houthis and warned that Sunday’s operation was “only the beginning.” The escalation comes amid months of tit-for-tat attacks that have already drawn U.S. and U.K. strikes on Houthi positions and disrupted maritime trade through the Red Sea.
