Teatro alla Scala in Milan has formally reinstated and will strictly enforce its dress code, barring entry to patrons wearing tank tops, shorts or flip-flops. Signs outlining the rules have been posted at entrances and printed on tickets, and staff have been instructed to escort non-compliant visitors outside without offering ticket refunds. The guidelines were first adopted in 2015 but had been applied loosely in recent seasons. Fortunato Ortombina, who became superintendent and artistic director in February, said the renewed vigilance reflects both decorum and practical considerations for spectators seated closely for multi-hour performances. Exceptions remain for traditional attire and sleeveless dresses, and the theatre continues to allow casual items such as T-shirts and trainers. The dress policy is part of a broader effort to tighten audience conduct that also targets food, drinks and unauthorised photography. Additional details will appear in La Scala’s magazine in September, the theatre said.
