A Chinese national has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of impersonating a police officer to defraud a woman in her 70s. The suspect allegedly called the victim, claiming her cash cards were being misused, then visited her home to deceive her into handing over two cash cards. He subsequently withdrew 500,000 yen in cash from ATMs. The man had entered Japan nine times since last year and is under investigation for related offenses. Separately, in New York, a Chinese national named Liqing Chi was arrested for posing as a U.S. Marshal to scam a woman out of $98,000. Despite being released on bond in the sanctuary state of New York, he was later apprehended by the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for deportation. Additionally, in Japan, a 37-year-old man named Hayashi Akio and two Chinese women were arrested for allegedly illegally contracting 14 mobile phones, which were sold to a special fraud group, with suspicions of money laundering involvement.
