The Japan Art Association on 15 July announced the five winners of the 36th Praemium Imperiale, often described as the “Nobel Prize of the Arts.” The 2025 laureates are Serbian performance pioneer Marina Abramović (sculpture), Scottish-born painter Peter Doig (painting), Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura (architecture), Hungarian pianist András Schiff (music) and Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (theatre/film). Each recipient will receive 15 million yen—about €90,000—at an awards ceremony scheduled for 22 October in Tokyo. The association also selected the United Kingdom’s National Youth Theatre for its young-artist encouragement programme. Founded in 1988, the Praemium Imperiale recognises lifetime achievement across five artistic disciplines. Previous honourees include architects Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, painter Yayoi Kusama and filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. This year’s group was unveiled simultaneously in Tokyo, London, Rome and three other cities, underscoring the prize’s global profile.
