The Imperial Family of Japan mourned the passing of their beloved dog Yuri, who died of old age at 16 years and 4 months. Yuri, a female mixed-breed dog with Shiba Inu lineage, was named by Princess Aiko and had been a cherished member of the family for over 16 years. The dog passed away peacefully at the Imperial Palace with the family present. Yuri was also known for her role as a therapy dog, providing comfort and support to children in hospital pediatric wards. The Imperial Household Agency released photos of Yuri during her lifetime, including moments with Empress Masako and participation in hospital summer festivals. The family expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Yuri, who had been a constant companion, especially to Princess Aiko.
