Japanese authorities seized approximately one ton of dried cannabis, marking the largest drug confiscation in the country to date. The cannabis, estimated to have a street value of around ¥5.2 billion (approximately $35 million), was smuggled from Vietnam disguised as binchotan charcoal in a shipping container. The shipment was intercepted following X-ray inspections by Tokyo Customs, and a controlled delivery operation led to the identification of the destination warehouse in Tochigi Prefecture. Three Vietnamese nationals have been arrested and indicted on suspicion of smuggling. The Kanto-Shinetsu Regional Bureau of Health and Welfare's Narcotics Control Department announced the seizure on August 13, 2025. This incident represents the largest quantity of illegal drugs seized in a single operation in Japan.
