Japanese researchers at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), in collaboration with Sumitomo Electric, have set a new world record for internet speed by achieving a data transmission rate of 1.02 petabits per second (Pbps). This breakthrough was demonstrated over a distance of approximately 1,808 kilometers (1,118 miles) using standard-sized fiber optic cables. The achieved speed is capable of downloading the entire Netflix library in under one second and streaming millions of 8K videos simultaneously. This new record is about 3.5 million times faster than the average internet speed in the United States and approximately 16 million times faster than the average speed in India, which is around 63.55 Mbps. The demonstration involved transmitting over 125,000 gigabytes of data per second, marking a significant advancement in fiber optic communication technology. Despite the record-setting speed, the technology remains in the laboratory stage and has not yet been deployed commercially.
