Japan has emphasized its autonomous approach to strengthening its defense capabilities amid ongoing discussions with the United States. Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya conveyed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio that Japan will make decisions on defense enhancements independently, without external pressure. Prime Minister Ishiba reiterated that Japan will decide on any increase in its defense budget on its own accord, resisting rushed compromises despite U.S. calls to boost military spending. Ishiba also highlighted that while Japan seeks a trade deal with the United States as soon as possible, certain elements between the two countries remain unresolved. He affirmed Japan's commitment to safeguarding its national interests throughout these negotiations.
