McDonald’s Company (Japan) Ltd. has scrapped plans to attach trading cards from the hit manga “One Piece” to Happy Meal sets that were due to launch nationwide on 29 August. The company said on 20 August that the cancellation is part of a wider review of its Happy Meal promotions and related sales practices. The decision comes less than two weeks after a Pokémon card giveaway ran from 9 to 11 August and descended into chaotic scenes, with resellers making bulk purchases, stores running out of roughly three million cards within hours and uneaten food reported discarded. McDonald’s issued an apology at the time and imposed ad-hoc purchase limits. Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency on 21 August formally requested that the fast-food chain tighten its procedures to prevent food waste and curb excessive buying. During the shelved One Piece campaign window, customers who order a Happy Meal will instead receive toys from previous promotions. Shares in McDonald’s Holdings Japan (TSE: 2702) slipped as much as 1.1% to ¥6,580 on Thursday before trimming losses.
