Kenya has experienced a series of protests and violent clashes over the past year, beginning with the storming of parliament in June 2024 against a proposed tax bill that resulted in over 60 deaths. On the one-year anniversary of these protests, thousands of young Kenyans marched nationwide demanding justice and accountability. The unrest escalated following the death of Albert Ojwang, a young man who died in police custody, prompting mourners to torch the Mawego Police Station in Homa Bay County during his funeral procession. Ahead of the 35th anniversary of the pro-democracy Saba Saba rallies on July 7, Kenyan security forces blocked major roads into Nairobi and imposed heavy restrictions. Despite this, nationwide protests erupted, leading to violent confrontations with police who used teargas, water cannons, and live ammunition. Official reports from the National Police Service indicated 11 fatalities, 52 injured police officers, 11 injured civilians, damage to multiple police, government, and civilian vehicles, and 567 arrests during the Saba Saba protests. Human rights groups have accused police of excessive force and aiding criminal gangs. Families of the victims, including those of Boniface Kariuki, a 22-year-old mask vendor shot by police during protests, have condemned police brutality and demanded justice. Opposition leaders have called for President William Ruto's impeachment, holding the government responsible for the violence. Lawmakers such as MP Ndindi Nyoro have publicly faulted the government for negligence and called for accountability. The protests reflect ongoing tensions over governance, police conduct, and demands for democratic reforms ahead of the 2027 elections.
