Kenya's National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has proposed a new policy aimed at curbing alcohol abuse by implementing several restrictions on the sale and promotion of alcoholic beverages. Key measures include raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 years and banning the sale of alcohol in supermarkets, restaurants, residential areas, and through online platforms, including home deliveries and courier services. The policy also prohibits social media influencers, celebrities, entertainment, sports, and media personalities from endorsing or advertising alcohol and related substances. Additionally, alcohol-related businesses will be barred from naming or branding sports teams, leagues, tournaments, or national teams after alcoholic products. The policy targets public spaces such as sports and medical facilities and learning institutions, where alcohol sales and hawking will be banned. Cabinet Secretary Murkomen has stated that officials found abetting drug abuse will be dismissed and face legal action. NACADA officials have emphasized that the proposals are still under discussion and have not yet been implemented, with public participation ongoing since 2023. The agency also clarified that no ban on alcohol advertisements or online sales has been introduced yet. Economists and lawmakers have acknowledged the seriousness of alcohol-related challenges in Kenya and the need for a balanced approach that considers both public health and economic impacts.

FCPA Hesbon Omollo – Economist: If these regulations are enacted as currently proposed, the consumption of the substance is likely to decrease. However, I believe the proposal must still undergo a thorough public participation process to ensure it does not negatively impact https://t.co/NtORd3LulS
