Bishops warn Kenya slipping into chaos, urge peace over protests https://t.co/vjG700bZwr
Kenya’s Anglican Church leadership on Friday warned that the country is sliding toward chaos after weeks of anti-government demonstrations that have left about 50 people dead and caused widespread property damage. Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit said the nation needed to “pause” and decide whether it was on a path to “life or death,” citing looting and violence during the 7 July Saba Saba protests that shut businesses and blocked roads into Nairobi’s central district. The bishops urged protest organisers to suspend further marches and asked politicians to halt public rallies, arguing that the gatherings are stoking ethnic tensions and lawlessness. They also demanded that the government compensate families of those killed and prosecute individuals responsible for extrajudicial shootings and vandalism. Church leaders condemned President William Ruto’s recent instruction to security forces to ‘shoot the legs’ of rioters, insisting police must act within the law. Bungoma Diocese Bishop Mark Kadima called for greater political tolerance, while Sapit appealed for a return to dialogue and respect for constitutional rights. The clerics said failure to de-escalate could push Kenya closer to ungovernability.
