Kenyan President William Ruto on 8 August unveiled a government framework to compensate civilians and security officers injured or killed during protests and demonstrations held in the country since 2017. The 120-day programme will be run from the Executive Office of the President in partnership with the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and the National Treasury. Prof. Makau Mutua, the president’s senior adviser on constitutional affairs and human rights, was named principal coordinator of the exercise. The presidential proclamation says the initiative seeks to uphold the constitutional right to peaceful assembly while addressing the human and economic costs of unrest. Details on funding, eligibility criteria and compensation amounts have not yet been released. The move follows commitments made in earlier cross-party talks aimed at easing political tensions.
