Kenyan President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga jointly led the first-ever meeting of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) parliamentary groups in Nairobi on August 18, 2025. The meeting aimed to solidify the political alliance between the two parties and fast-track the implementation of the NADCO report and a 10-point agenda. Both leaders emphasized the need for unity and cooperation within the coalition, despite internal divisions within ODM. President Ruto condemned corruption within parliament, revealing that some MPs accepted bribes of up to 10 million Kenyan shillings to pass the Anti-Money Laundering Bill and alleging that a governor distributed 150 million shillings for similar purposes. He vowed to arrest and prosecute MPs involved in extortion and corruption, highlighting the damage such practices cause to the credibility of parliament. Raila Odinga supported the crackdown on corruption and reiterated calls to strip MPs of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) management, advocating for its transfer to counties. The meeting also addressed concerns about youth grievances and the need for government accountability. Following the parliamentary session, President Ruto departed for Japan to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Yokohama, where he is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The UDA-ODM alliance remains a focal point in Kenyan politics, with analysts noting its role in maintaining political stability and economic transformation amid emerging challenges from other political blocs ahead of the 2027 elections.
