The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has ordered Brazilian energy company Raizen Energia and Swiss sugar merchant Raizen Trading to pay a civil monetary penalty of $750,000. This action follows the firms' involvement in illegal wash sales related to sugar contracts valued at over $1 billion. CFTC Commissioner Caroline Pham noted that the companies should have received more credit for self-reporting their violations. In a separate enforcement action, the CFTC also mandated an unregistered pool operator and its managing member to pay more than $520,000 for fraud violations. These developments highlight ongoing regulatory scrutiny in the commodities trading sector.
