Getty Images is investing millions of dollars in its ongoing legal battle against Stability AI, the company behind the popular text-to-image model Stable Diffusion. Getty Images CEO Craig Peters confirmed that the company is suing Stability AI in both the United Kingdom and the United States, accusing it of copying 12 million images without permission. The trial is scheduled to begin in June 2025 and is expected to have significant implications for the artificial intelligence industry, potentially setting a precedent on whether AI companies must compensate copyright owners or if unrestricted content scraping will be permitted. The high costs of litigation have forced Getty Images to carefully select its legal battles related to AI technologies.
