In August, former Kansas bank CEO Shan Hanes of Heartland Tri-State was sentenced to nearly 25 years after stealing $47 million from customer accounts and wiring the money to cryptocurrency accounts run by scammers. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has managed to recover $8 million of the stolen funds. Hanes' actions left the bank in a dire financial situation, with investors losing $9 million.
