Meta Platforms has reached an out-of-court settlement with conservative activist Robby Starbuck, ending a defamation lawsuit that accused the company’s artificial-intelligence chatbot of falsely claiming he was a white nationalist who took part in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Under the agreement, Starbuck will join Meta as a consultant to the Product Policy team, collaborating on efforts to reduce political bias in large-language models and limit so-called ‘hallucinations’—fabricated statements generated by the software. Financial terms were not disclosed. Starbuck filed the suit in Delaware Superior Court in April after screenshots circulated online showing Meta AI asserting that he had been arrested on Jan. 6 and recommending he lose custody of his children. In a joint statement the parties said they had “resolved this matter to our mutual satisfaction” and will continue working together to improve accuracy and ideological neutrality across Meta’s AI products.
