OpenAI has alleged in a new court filing that Elon Musk met with Meta Platforms Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year to discuss financing a $97 billion unsolicited bid to acquire the ChatGPT developer. The disclosure was made public on 22 Aug 2025 in Musk’s ongoing lawsuit against OpenAI over the company’s governance and profit-sharing structure. According to the filing, OpenAI subpoenaed Meta in June seeking documents and communications that could clarify the social-media company’s role in the proposed takeover. OpenAI says it learned that Musk and Zuckerberg talked about potential investment or other financing arrangements tied to the February bid, which the startup’s board rejected. Meta has objected to the subpoena, arguing that any relevant information can be obtained directly from Musk and his artificial-intelligence venture xAI and that its internal deliberations are not germane to the dispute. OpenAI is now asking the court to compel Meta to turn over the requested materials, escalating a legal clash that has already drawn in some of Silicon Valley’s largest AI rivals.
