President Donald Trump hosted an exclusive dinner at his Virginia golf club for the top 220 holders of his $TRUMP meme coin, which was launched in January. Attendees reportedly spent an average of over $1 million each, with some estimates placing the total at $148 million or higher. The contest to attend ran from April 23 to May 12, and the top 25 investors, who spent about $4.8 million each, were granted a VIP reception and a private White House tour. Chinese billionaire Justin Sun, who invested over $40 million in $TRUMP and $75 million in World Liberty Financial, was among the top holders, and former NBA player Lamar Odom also attended. The dinner drew criticism for allowing both foreign and domestic investors to gain access to the president by purchasing large quantities of the cryptocurrency. Ethics watchdogs and lawmakers from both parties raised concerns about national security and foreign influence, noting that 19 of the top 25 investors were foreign nationals. The Securities and Exchange Commission dropped its fraud case against Justin Sun, as well as other crypto cases, shortly after Trump took office. The event was met with protests outside the venue, and no official guest list was released. Attendees expressed disappointment with the quality of the event, citing poor food and limited interaction with the president, whose speech lasted 23 minutes and was mostly directed at the top investors. The meal included steak, halibut, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and chocolate lava cake, with only water and Trump-branded wine served. Some guests left dissatisfied, comparing the food to airline meals. VIPs received Trump-branded watches, and an afterparty was held at the Marriott. The Trump family's business interests have expanded since his return to the presidency, with revenue from the $TRUMP coin and transaction fees estimated at over $320 million, and the market value of the coin around $2.65 billion. About 80% of the coin is controlled by Trump affiliates. The family also launched World Liberty Financial and an exclusive Washington club with a $500,000 membership fee. They received a luxury jet from Qatar, valued between $200 million and $400 million, which was formally donated to the U.S. Air Force but remains available for Trump's use. Trump's net worth is now estimated at $5.1 billion, with $2.9 billion in crypto holdings. Despite bipartisan criticism and public concern over the acceptance of foreign gifts and potential conflicts of interest, the White House has defended the president's actions, stating the dinner was 'not a White House dinner' and citing his wealth and compliance with applicable laws.
