The Lebanese Army has initiated a large-scale disarmament campaign targeting Palestinian refugee camps in southern Lebanon, marking a notable effort to reassert state control over armed groups. Over the past week, the army has received multiple truckloads of heavy and medium weaponry from Palestinian factions, primarily from Fatah, in camps including Rashidieh, Al-Bass, the camp south of Beirut, and camps near the southern coastal city of Tyre. This move is part of the Lebanese government's broader initiative to consolidate weapons exclusively under state authority, particularly in areas south of the Litani River. However, Hamas has publicly refused to surrender its arms. The Lebanese Army's campaign represents the most extensive weapons collection drive since the end of Lebanon's civil war, aiming to diminish the military presence of Palestinian factions and reduce the influence of non-state armed groups such as Hezbollah. The handover of arms from Palestinian camps is seen as a step toward restoring Lebanese sovereignty over its territory.
Palestinians are handing over their arms in Lebanon. Their arms are old, rusty, antiquated and irrelevant. Hezbollah's arsenal and military command is the one that undermines Lebanese sovereignty.
Thank you Palestinians for handing over your arms to the State of #Lebanon. Now an apology for undermining the sovereignty of your host country would be nice.
