Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister have urged the United States delegation in Beirut to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to fully withdraw Israeli forces and end attacks in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese government has requested a one-year extension of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), emphasizing its political and military importance in maintaining stability in the region. Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Metri highlighted UNIFIL's role alongside the Lebanese army over the past 16 years in securing the south and stressed the need for UNIFIL's continued presence to help the Lebanese army enforce state control south of the Litani River and monitor adherence to the ceasefire and the Blue Line. Lebanon is awaiting Israel's official response to a proposal paper prepared by the U.S. envoy Tom Barrack aimed at ending hostilities, with Barrack stating it is "Israel's turn to comply with the 2024 ceasefire." However, Israel has rejected Barrack's proposal to end fighting with Hezbollah, despite agreeing to gradually stop targeted strikes in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese President also denied media reports about Israel's intention to establish a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. Meanwhile, the Syrian government denied reports that it would sign a security agreement with Israel in September 2025. Lebanon continues to emphasize the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to maintain peace and stability in the south.
