Malian judicial authorities have indicted former prime minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga on charges of “atteinte aux biens publics,” a criminal offence covering the embezzlement of public funds. A judge issued a detention order on 19 August, sending the 66-year-old politician to jail pending further proceedings, according to reports from RFI and France 24. Details of the alleged malfeasance and the amount of money involved were not immediately disclosed. Maïga’s lawyers have not commented publicly on the accusations. The arrest marks one of the highest-profile anti-corruption cases since the military-led government assumed power in Bamako.
