The Bitrue cryptocurrency exchange was exploited in April 2023 due to a private key compromise, resulting in the theft of approximately $23 million worth of various tokens. Over the past two years, the hacker converted these stolen assets into Ethereum (ETH) and has been laundering the funds through the privacy-focused mixer Tornado Cash. The exploiter initially sold 4,207 ETH for around $16.34 million in DAI at a price of $3,885 per ETH in March 2024, then used those DAI to repurchase ETH at lower prices, effectively profiting from price fluctuations. This trading activity has generated an estimated $9.3 million in gains, increasing the value of the stolen assets by about $9.36 million compared to the original theft. The hacker continues to send ETH to Tornado Cash, further obscuring the trail of the stolen funds.

So, imagine placing a big trade on a DEX… …but right before your trade goes through, a bot sees it. It slips in front of you, pushes the price up and sells it right back to you at a profit. You pay extra. They pocket the difference. This is a reality that happens every day. https://t.co/IzY3LLxAgE
