Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico, has proposed Genaro Lozano Valencia as the new ambassador of Mexico to Italy, as well as to Albania, Malta, and San Marino. Lozano, an international relations expert, television presenter, and LGBT rights activist, received the Italian government's approval for the appointment. His nomination was submitted to the Mexican Congress, where he appeared before the Senate and the Permanent Commission for ratification. On August 20, 2025, the Senate ratified Lozano's appointment with 25 votes in favor and 9 against, while the Permanent Commission approved it with 12 votes in favor and 2 against. Lozano will replace Carlos García de Alba as ambassador. Despite the ratification, opposition parties, including PRI and PAN, criticized the appointment citing Lozano's lack of neutrality and questioned his experience and capacity to represent Mexico. Additionally, Lozano faced scrutiny for a previously published critical article against Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Sheinbaum defended the appointment, highlighting Lozano's expertise in international relations and his commitment to social causes. Lozano expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to serve Mexico with responsibility, pride, and dedication.
