Mexican Security and Citizen Protection Secretary Omar García Harfuch said on Tuesday that alleged Sinaloa cartel figure Ovidio Guzmán López remains imprisoned in the United States and “there is no indication he will be released soon.” Speaking at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s daily news briefing, García Harfuch stressed that Guzmán is still under federal custody despite recent confusion after his name briefly disappeared from the U.S. Bureau of Prisons website. Guzmán, a son of convicted drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, was captured by Mexican military forces and extradited to the United States under an existing bilateral treaty to face narcotics-trafficking charges. García Harfuch noted that an outstanding Mexican arrest warrant remains in force; if Mexican prosecutors wish to try him at home, they would need to file a formal extradition request once U.S. judicial proceedings conclude.
