Bermúdez, who has been sought internationally since January 2025 with a red notice issued by Interpol, faces charges including organized crime, extortion, and kidnapping. He fled Mexico on January 26, 2025, and remains a fugitive. Bermúdez was identified as the leader of "La Barredora," which has operated actively in Chiapas since 2019. Despite the allegations against Bermúdez, Adán Augusto López, now Morena's Senate coordinator, denied any prior knowledge of his ex-secretary's criminal links and is not under investigation. Bermúdez's nephew, Gerardo Bermúdez Arreola, was arrested in Paraguay for illegal sports betting but is not linked to the criminal investigations against "La Barredora." The Morena party has suspended Bermúdez's party rights and is considering his expulsion. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed ongoing investigations and the collaboration between federal and state authorities in pursuing Bermúdez.
