Mexico’s Supreme Court held an extraordinary plenary meeting on 19 August, the last to be chaired by outgoing Chief Justice Norma Piña before the court’s current 11-member line-up is replaced on 1 September by justices elected in the country’s first nationwide judicial vote on 1 June. Speaking at her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum hailed the session as “the end of an era of nepotism” and said the impending change would usher in “a new and better phase” for the judiciary, which she accused of having long served “a privileged few.” Piña told colleagues that “history and society will judge those of us who have judged,” stressing that the court remains a bulwark of constitutional democracy. Court employees formed a guard of honour and applauded departing ministers—among them critics of the government’s judicial overhaul—before the session began. The plenary cleared several pending electoral cases but is expected to reconvene on 26 August, and if necessary on 28 August, the statutory deadline for resolving all challenges stemming from this year’s judicial elections.
