Britain, France and Germany concluded deputy-minister-level talks with Iran in Geneva on 26 August without resolving disagreements over Tehran’s accelerating nuclear program. The European trio, known as the E3, reiterated that they will reinstate United Nations sanctions under the 2015 accord’s “snapback” clause unless a credible diplomatic pathway is agreed by the end of August. A German government spokesperson said on 27 August that activating the snapback mechanism "remains an option" after the Geneva meeting failed to narrow differences. The E3 deadline of 31 August is intended to compel Iran to curb uranium enrichment that has reached 60 percent purity and to restore full International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring. Tehran has taken a conciliatory step by allowing U.N. inspectors to re-enter its facilities for the first time since June’s Israeli-U.S. strikes, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat that Iran is ready to resume indirect negotiations with the United States. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi separately urged the Europeans to “give diplomacy time and space.” Failure to avert snapback sanctions would reinstate wide-ranging U.N. measures, deepen Iran’s economic isolation and raise the risk of further regional escalation. The window for compromise is limited: the E3’s legal authority to trigger the mechanism expires on 18 October, heightening pressure on all parties to clinch at least an interim arrangement in the coming days.
